| Pandhayam, has an old fashioned 70's style narration and
presentation. It's tooled out ofGhilli and Sivakasi, by the director S.A Chandrasekhar and the whole film looks like it has been made to glorify the super hero image of his son Ilayathalapathy Vijay. To make a film just to glorify a superstar at times becomes tedious. A film should be made because you've got a great story to tell. Sadly, it has one which is an illogical piece that's about thirty years too late and at times test the viewers intelligence The story is clichéd, unimaginative and amateurish to say the least. The only time you really smile is when Prakash Raj appears on screen but even his presence can't do much to elevate your spirits, but that's because he's straitjacketed in a role that's badly written and does little justice to his screen presence. The cameo appearance of Vijay in two scenes is neither funny nor clever; it's really quite irritating to have characters mouthing dialogues praising his virtues and love for parents. Sindhu Tolani, is cute and pleasant, but has very little personality while we wonder what made Radhika take up that long suffering Anni role? The story- A local thug and criminal who kills people like mosquitoes Masanam (Prakash Raj) slowly rises up the ranks to be a Minister. We have Shakthivel (Nitin Satya) a die-hard fan of actor Vijay who studies in a city college. He falls in love with the wicked minister's sister Thulasi (Sindhu) and challenges him (he has a reason for that) and a cat and mouse game ensues. What follows is a series of incidents between the two that leads to a melodramatic climax. The film comes crashing down because Prakash Raj just sleepwalks through his scenes. On the strength of his charisma and screen presence, he has survived in similar roles in umpteen films but when he's disinterested, it clearly shows. Two films old, Nitin Satya is overshadowed by Prakash Raj and he has no originality in terms of dialogue delivery or body language (you have to excuse him as he has been obviously asked to imitate Vijay). There are two other hero side-kicks who ape Rajinikanth and Vadivel in body language and dialogue delivery! Technically the film is tacky and is unapologetically loud, crass and aimed at front benchers. The songs of Vijay Antony suits the mood of the film with the remix Surangani.. and the melodious Kadhal Theeviravathi… being the pick of the lot. On the whole, the film is like one of those 70's action dramas that's too loud and too contrived with a series of sloppy scenes slapped together without sense or logic. Verdict: Below Average |
