| Once Ajit became a superstar, he is in no mood to take chances or experiment. If you have a dedicated fan following, who lap up whatever you do on screen and brings a great opening, why take risks? Aalwar is a film built on a predictable premise, much in the tradition of most films in the same formulaic masala entertainer genre with a larger-than-life hero, punch line dialogues, overdose of violence and dream songs, comedy track , mother and sister sentiments... The story is as old as hills. Aalwar (Ajit), an honest-to-goodness temple priest turns vigilante, after a bunch a bad guys (Lal, Vincent Asokan & others) brutally kills his mother (Geeta) and sister. Though he is given up as dead by the baddies, Aalwar surfaces as Shiva, a mortuary attendant at a Government hospital. Shiva single-handedly tries to cleanse the system by eliminating rowdies and scums of the earth dressed up as Hindu Gods like Sri Rama , Lord Krishna and finally in the climax splits open the stomach of the main villain as Lord Narasimha! (Were the censors sleeping?). But debutant director Sella seemed to have worked on the premise that even these avatars of Hindu Gods came to earth to demolish evil! And his hero a temple priest turned vigilante introduces himself to the villains before killing them with the punch line - “Njan Kadavul!” (I am God!)! Practically every single character in the film is a stereotype. Asin looks a million bucks, but she has the shortest role in her career and whenever she appears on screen, you can predict that a song is going to break out! All the songs are her dream songs which is modeled on PT exercises in Switzerland or sets. Vivek, Manorama and Co provides the usual comedy track and also mouths dialogues glorifying the hero. If you are looking for merits here is one- Ajit as Shiva alias Aalwar who has serious look throughout the first half. You can’t take your eyes off him in those designer suits in song sequences. Ajit fans can watch it nevertheless, as it's Pongal and some senseless entertainment is not a bad idea. Verdict: Strictly for Ajit fans |
