One wished that Hoshimin had a better written script which could have whipped up a winsome screenplay on the bitter-sweet nature of romance. All we end up with is some old fashioned virtues of love.

The story- Shiva (Bharath) a lower middle class guy is the son of a postmaster in Tamaraikulam village near Madurai. He joins graduation in a Bangalore College where he meets Pooja (Renuka Menon) a girl born and brought up in US. She loves everything about US but lives with her grandparents.

At College when she is asked to do a project she does a study on the poverty in India which raises the hackles of students and teachers. Soon Shiva falls hook-line-sinker for Pooja who feels that she is a neglected and always threatens to go back to US. But her grandfather (Pyramid Natarajan) and Shiva wants her to stay back in India.

Shiva and an animated character who comes as a Sutradar think of a plan to make Pooja’s life interesting and happy. Shiva starts sending her love letters in the name of “Mr X” and peps her up. But soon complications set in which is all sorted out with a happy ending.

One of the most irritating things in February 14 is the animated character. It is a plot device, a straight lift from Kunal Kohli’s Hum Tum to spice up the proceeding and spoon feed the audience with the feelings of the hero!

Among the plus points are the music of Bharadwaj, Ratnavel’s camera and the performance of Bharath and Renuka. But Vadivelu’s comedy track falls flat and the jokes of Sathyan, Suman Shetty and Santhanam are stale. The song ‘Laila Majnu Poi Than…” is the pick of the album and it stays on your lips. The picturisation of songs are also good.

On the whole Februray 14 is askew all right, but probably Hoshimin will improve and tell us another romantic tale with far more conviction next time.
