Sachein is a candy floss romantic entertainer. Vijay should be applauded as he tries his best to break free from his rigid mass movie mould.
The film has no typical Vijay elements like crude villains, dialogues, blood and gore or aruvaal’s! Debutant director Johan (spelled numerologically) tries to make Vijay a romantic hero, which his fans may not digest. The story is wafer thin and there are no major twists but the much awaited Bipasha item number is missing! It is a plain vanilla love story between two students Sachein(Vijay) and Shalini(Genelia) studying in a campus in Ooty, where it is misty all the time. The students in this college include Vadivel of all people. They are always romancing, playing basketball or singing songs. All that Sachein wants from Shalini is to say four words- “I Love You Sachein”, and therein lies the catch - She refuses to say that openly till the end at a climax in an airport. The plot does lapse into predictability as the tepid love story unfolds at a slow pace, with an extremely manipulated climax. Vadivel as a student (though explained) is ridiculous. Bipasha has a walk-in role and you will miss her if you wink. Dhanu, the producer, had paid her a whopping Rs 75 lakhs but her sizzling item number is missing! The high points are Devi Sri Prasad’s chic score, Thotta Tharani’s minimalist sets, and cinematographer Jeeva’s breath taking camera and diffused lighting which gives it a cool look. Genelia is charming and pitches in with a good performance. Be it the scenes when she tells the love-struck Sachein to buzz off or in the climax when she finally says that she is in love, she is a joy to watch. Bipasha is a major let down both in the acting and looks. Finally at the epicenter of it all is the Vijay sans any make-up. He is spontaneous, a great dancer, has perfect comedy timing and does justice to his loosely etched out character of a happy-go-lucky millionaire! If nothing else, watch Sachein for this one man show, he is there in every frame of the film. Verdict- Candy floss romance |
