| The big daddy Satyaraj’s Maha Nadigan is an unmitigated endurance test. It is hard to tell you what Satyaraj wants to convey, that superstars are megalomaniacs who are obsessed with themselves and they do not make good politicians? Director Sakthi Chidambaram ends up taking pot shots at Tamil superstars and political leaders in this mindless film. Lights, camera, action…. Its show time folks! The first 30 minutes of the film takes a look at the seamy side of superstardom. A little known extra Satya (Satyaraj) through his machinations and being street smart uses various people including two glamourous actress Nandini (Mumtaz) and Aishwarya (Namita) to climb the ladder of superstardom. A crooked politician Arivanandan (P.Vasu) seeing his popularity wants him to join politics so that he can be used to settle scores with his enemies within the party and also capture power. But Satya the smart guy that he is becomes Chief Minister and pretending to be corrupt cleanses the system. Later he hands over power to a select group of young people led by district collector Devaki (Mallika) the widow of his fan club president Muthu (Manoj) who saved his life! Maha Nadigan in a way could have been a biting satire but it peters out to be another crass commercial where glamour and oomph are given priority over story and screenplay. Mumtaz and Namitha compete with each other in a stripping spree while Satyaraj does exactly the same thing like ageing stars he made fun of in the film. However his take-off on Rajnikanth, like saying En Vazhi… Kurukku Vazhi!, Vijaykanth and Ajit are a few genuinely funny moments in the film. The Vayasu..Vayasu.. song picturised on Namitha has vulgar lyrics and is shot in a crude way. Deva’s music provides titillation! Maha Nadigan is a profusion of cleavages, mindless humour, reality check on actors turning politicians and is pointless as it tries to infuse whimsical humour with satire. No go! Verdict: Avoidable
