In the late 90’s Agathiyan was considered as a director who could make believable love stories with a twist as in the films like Kathal Kottai and Gokulathil Seethai. Now after a break, he is back with Ramakrishna with an all new star cast set against a village milieu which just does not live up to his earlier works.

A tycoon Ramakrishna (Jai Akash) gives a promise to his dying mother (Saranya) that he would take a break from his business commitments and visit a remote village in search of his roots. So he reaches the place as a simple uneducated guy and is given shelter by Pavalakodi (Vani), a dancer and her brother (Charlie). He does odd jobs for the wealthy but arrogant girl Pooncholai (Sridevika) who takes a liking for him.

Meanwhile his search leads him to the village chief (Vijayakumar) who turns out to be his father! Vijayakumar has another wife and son who accept Ramakrishna as the ‘elder brother` and future heir. This leads to complications as Pooncholai’s uncle (Jaguar Thangam) wants to be the chief as he has his own axe to grind against Vijayakumar family.

How Ramakrishna deals with the situations, emerges as a winner in a stick fight and marries Pooncholai forms the rest of the story. Everything about the film like the story, screenplay, dialogues and direction looks outdated. Agathiyan seems to have lost focus somewhere down the lane as it is confusing as to what message he had to convey to the audience? Was it that living in a village is better than the city life?

The romance between the lead pair is not convincing. Jai Akash as the city slicker turned villager is ok while Sridevika makes a decent debut. The comedy track of Muthukalai and Charlie is good. Deva’s music is a let down.

Verdict: Average
