Barun Mukherjee is one of the most sought-after cinematographers in
Bollywood, having shot some of the most beautiful women in Bollywood
from Hema Malini in Baghban to Madhuri Dixit in Aja Nachle. He is now
working in NRI Suman Ghosh’s new film Dwando, his first Bengali
project.
“My relationship with Suman goes back to the time when,
impressed with his first film Podokhep, I called him up in Miami and
we became phone-friends. He met me in Mumbai and requested me to do
the work in his new film. I liked the subject.” Mukherjee recalls.
Dwando is about a woman’s conflict and Barun is trying to give a
naturalistic look. “I am trying to create the drama of a woman going
through trauma with proper framing and lighting. Nothing can be
gimmicky and loud but subtle and subdued. It’s not an easy job, let
me tell you,” says Barun.
Among his major films in Bollywood are –
Chakra, Aaj ki Awaaz, Baghban, Babul. Among the most memorable faces
he has photographed, in his opinion, is Smita Patil who he picturised
in Chakra and Aaj Ki Awaaz many years ago.
