Gautham Vasudeva Menon is one director who has made significant changes to Tamil commercial cinema. A former assistant to Rajeev Menon, he started his career in films as an assistant director with Minsara Kanavu.
In a career spanning eight years, Gautham has done just five Tamil films including two remakes of his own Tamil films in Hindi and Telugu and ushered in a new way of story telling and has also created unforgettable characters who are realistic and lifelike.
Gautham made a mark in the Tamil film world with his debut film, the candyfloss love story Minnale which was a run-away super hit. The film worked wonders for its hero Madhavan and the songs in the film made Harris Jayaraj a household name.
Exclusive Interview: "I am seriously relieved": Gautham Menon
After the success of Minnale, Gautham remade Minnale into Hindi titled Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein. His second film Kakka Kaakka with Surya and Jyothika in the lead was a cult classic.
The story, screenplay and dialogues penned by Gautham centered round an honest cop who has to face many trials and tribulations. But the highlight of Kakka Kaakka was the beautiful romance weaved into an action story.
His biggest strength is his basic story foundation in his scripts, and the way he is able to show throw a different light to a star burdened by his image. Nobody in tinsel town can package a film with haunting music and stunning visuals, as the soft spoken director who's pairing with Harris Jayaraj has always produced foot-tapping numbers.
His Vetayadu Vilayadu with Kamal Hassan was also a super hit. This film is another episode in a police officer’s life and is a stylishly made action thriller. Gautham’s fourth Tamil film Pachaikili Muthucharam was another feather to his cap though it was not a big hit.
His latest film Vaaranam Aayiram has taken an amazing opening worldwide especially at the multiplexes. Gautham Vasudev Menon is a relieved man but is not exactly happy about the mixed reactions from critics and media.
