Kids love magic, even if it’s scientific mumbo-jumbo. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, the film is about Arun (Anil Kapoor), a music teacher who adopts orphaned children and looks after them in his rented home. Calendar (Satish Kaushik) is their cook—who can forget his line ‘mera naam hain Calendar, mein to chala kitchen ke andar’.
It’s when child-hating journalist Seema (Sridevi) rents a room in their house and Arun discovers a gadget that can make anyone invisible, that the story really takes off. Hindi films’ most adored villain came in the form of Mugambo, played by Amrish Puri, who orders men to jump into acid and wants to rule the world, starting with India. ‘Mugambo khush hua’ he roars comically when he’s pleased. Other pluses include Sridevi’s Hawa hawai song and her impeccable comic timing in the Charlie Chaplin scene. A wonderful mix of comedy, sci-fi, mischief, emotions and the all-pervasive message of good winning over evil.
