The audience has had a strange relationship with period films -either elevating it to super successes or major flops. With the ambitious Jodhaa-Akbar releasing this Friday, it remains to be seen how the sentiments of the audience swerves. But it`s a tricky thing to work on a period film. With most of them inspired by real events,there is always the precariousness of being accused of taking way too much cinematic license. Take the case of Jodhaa-Akbar that is already mired in controversy as some historians have claimed that Gowariker has got the name of the queen all wrong. The filmmaker has pleaded that he got authentic information from the royal family themselves. Still, there seems to be no slowing down when it comes to period dramas. In the near future we will see films made on Mahabharata, Ramayan and even Jhansi ki Rani. Here`s a walk down recent past to look at the blockbuster and disasters that were period films.
