Ranbir is the son of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh and the grandson of showman Raj Kapoor, while Sonam is Anil Kapoor's daughter.

While she was interacting with the media, Sonam said, "Please watch Saawariya and encourage Ranbir and me. It's our first film together."

Speaking about his lead pair, Bhansali said, "Sonam is a vintage combination of Waheeda Rehmanji and Rekhaji. She has that poetic quality. Ranbir brings the best of his grandfather and his father in his personality. Audiences of all ages have warmed up to the two of them, although they neither act nor dress like the average metro-centric dude."
