Whenever Sanjay
Leela Bhansali makes a film, it’s a musical extravaganza, even if the
product is not a musical in the literal sense. As important an ingredient,
as the story or the casting, music in Bhansali’s films is its very soul
and identification, like an individual handshake.
His obsession with outstanding music is so great
that reportedly, it brings out the worst in him. Shuddering studio recordists
vouch for his bad temper during recordings, while the newbie singer is
being scolded by the director to tears. Of course, once the music is done
and the songs are almost as big, if not bigger, than the super hit film,
all is forgiven and the next film signed with the menacing director now
turned mentor.
Bhansali’s genius lies not just in bringing out
the best music, but also intelligently insinuating the songs in the film’s
narrative. He doesn’t insult the song by just accommodating it anywhere
for the sake of it; a great song gets the respect it deserves and appears
importantly, taking the film forward or stating a point. Bhansali also
has an unshakable eye for talent and is responsible for introducing Ismail
Durbar, Shreya Ghosal and Nusrat Badr to the industry. Here’s trailing
down a musical lane with the director.
