Movies come and go, but some of the memorable dialogues stay on to become part of our idiom. A look at some of our favourite lines: the brilliant, the romantic and the silliest.
Devdas: 1955
“Kaun kambakht bardaasht karne ko peeta hai? Main to peeta hoon ke bas saans le sakun.”
These lines were immortalised by the legendary Dilip Kumar, which was later mouthed by SRK in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s remake of Devdas.
Mother India: 1957
“Tu mujhe nahin maar sakti. Tu meri maa hai.”
“Mein pehle ek aurat hoon.”
A confident Sunil Dutt is sure that Nargis, who plays his mother in this
historic film, can never kill him. But his hopes are dashed when she puts
social responsibility above maternal love.
Mughal-e-Azam: 1960
“Anarkali, Salim ki mohabbat tumhe marne nahin degi aur hum tumhe jeene nahin denge.”
Prithviraj Kapoor, who plays Akbar, turns tyrant to a docile Madhubala in one of the most popular love stories of all time.
Guide: 1965

Anand: 1970
“Hum sab rangmanch ki katputliyan hain jinki dor uparwale ki ungliyon se bandhi hui hai. Kab kaun kaise uthega, yeh koi nahin bata sakta.”
