Amitabh Bachchan is one actor, who is unarguably on the wish list of every big Bollywood director. Apart from the bunch of new-age directors (Vipul Shah, Karan Johar, Shaad Ali, Rituparno Ghosh, Sanjay Gupta, Apoorva Lakhia, Farhan Akhtar, etc) a whole horde of successful directors of the 90's, including Ram Gopal Varma, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rajkumar Santoshi have created author-backed characters for the Big B.
Another prominent filmmaker of the 90's joins the Bachchan brigade - Vidhu Vinod Chopra. This certainly would be one of the most lethal and looked out for combination in Bollywood in the recent future.
In 'Yagna', Vidhu Vinod Chopra returns to direction after a gap of five long years. He has lately been scripting and backing fascinating films like Parineeta and Munnabhai MBBS. The last time he donned the director's hat was in Mission Kashmir (2000). Yagna will excite the audiences who are awaiting the Chopra charm to strike back in cinema.
The single shot trailer entirely focuses on and features only one character from the movie -- Amitabh Bachchan. In Bachchan's voiceover the promo opens with an ageing father writing a letter to his son.
Bachchan, who plays the old man, is the last trustworthy guardian of a royal imperial family. The actor intentionally vibrates his voice to a grainy effect to exemplify his aged character in the film.
Even his look for the movie is unusual from the looks he has donned in recent films. An extra long beard with a traditional turban lends more maturity to his character.
While the inquisitively cut trailer of Yagna gives the right feel for the film, it still creates so much curiosity around the movie.
Teh movie is about this loyal guardian of an ancient royal castle whose dharma is to protect those who live within the castle. However, we don't know who resides inside the castle.
The guardian vows to burn down all the secrets of the royal family (that were restricted so far only till him) with the holy fire (Yagna) of his own funeral. However, we don't know what are these secrets.
The trailer finally ends with chants of Sanskrit mantras that are a vital part of the holy Yagnas. The introductory trailer of Yagna makes an intense impact and that too without using other characters from its colossal cast, including Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Jackie Shroff and Vidya Balan.
And come to think of it, all these characters have given one of their career-best performances in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's films. Yagna is something to look forward to in the spring of 2006.
