Bharuch: With just two days left for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls commences in Gujarat, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday raised an alarm regarding existence of 'fake voters' in Bharuch constituency.
BJP district General Secretary Shirish Bangadiya said the voters list in polling booth numbers 117 and 118 in the Bharuch constituency had same names and addresses.
"'We have identified over 250 voters whose names are present in both the polling booths. We have informed the District Returning Officer about existence of fake voters and have also forwarded a formal application to him for the same," he told press confernce here.
When contacted, the district returning officer and Collector of Bharuch district Rajeev Topno said he had received an application in this matter. "In fact, we had forwarded two copies of the voters list to all the political parties beforehand. No objections were raised then," he told UNI.
"Now as this controversy has erupted on the eve of the elections, we will maintain a strong vigil at all the sensitive booths, including booth numbers 117 and 118," he assured.
"I have forwarded the application to the electoral registration officer here and it is upto him to take further action in this matter," Topno added.
Bharuch constituency, having 12,38,555 registered voters, will witness a three-pronged fight between BJP candidate Mansukhbhai Vasava, the only Muslim Congress candidate from Gujarat Muhammed Fansiwala Patel and tribal leader Chhotubhai Vasava of Janata Dal (United).
