Tech writing ind to weather rough times

Pune: The technical writing industry, which has been having good times, is now all set to weather rough times. The Society of Technical Communication (STC) in a survey has noted that though it has seen a growth of 10 per cent in the average salaries of Indian Technical Communicators, the median salary levels have come down by 0.8 per cent.

Vasant Vaidyanathan, President, STC, noted that the survey was conducted through a Web-based questionnaire open from December 1 to 11as also a paper-based questionnaire to which about 355 respondents had responded.

He said the salary levels of technical communicators with more than five years’ experience had shown the highest raise as compared to 2007 while those of the communicators with lesser experience had decreased compared to 2007 levels.

Hyderabad was the highest-paying city in 2008 while Pune, which had been leading till 2007, had dropped down in the list. He said the salary levels of Indian Technical Communicators are about 18 per cent to 35 per cent of those of the US counterparts.

From Rs 6,05,000 last year, the Indian average salary has dropped down to Rs 6 lakh in 2008. Vasant noted that there was shortage of technical communicators in India and to bridge the gap between demand and supply,

STC has taken some key initiatives and was talking to universities to add a special module on technical writing in their journalism or communication courses.

He noted that the syllabus and course material would be supplied by STC and pointed out that at Christ University in Bangalore, a technical writing course was added to the Master’s course.

Sikkim Manipal University was planning to launch a 1-year PG course in technical writing as a distance learning programme and a formal academic programme in technical writing would be launched at University of Mysore and has been launched at Dayanand Sagar Institutions, he said.
