Stock recommendation on Aug 27

2009-08-27 16:11:10

3:45 PM: The market shrugged off a weak start and rallied into the positive zone past noon but remained choppy till the end of the session.

Global cues were not any positive today. Some short-covering due to expiry of August series derivatives contracts aided the rally to an extent.

Unveiling the five-year foreign policy, the commerce minister set a target of US$ 200 billion worth exports for next fiscal, a feat that India failed to achieve in 2008-09 due to a slump in global demand in the face of financial crisis.

The government extended tax holiday and duty refund for exporters, while allowing duty free capital goods import under its Foreign Trade Policy to insulate them from protectionism induced by recession abroad.

The Sensex ended the day at 15,807.44 (provisional) with a gain of 37.59 points or 0.24%.

The Nifty closed at 4696.05, up 15.20 points or 0.32%.

Consumer durables, capital goods and pharma stocks had a good outing today.

IT stocks opened well but turned a bit easy later on in the day.

Bank, realty, metal and oil stocks were subdued.

Midcap and smallcap stocks pared gains and ended off their highs.

Tata Power, Bharti Airtel, Wipro, L&T, Sterlite, BHEL, ITC, M&M and SBI ended with notable gains.

Tata Steel went down by over 6% on weak results.

HUL, Tata Motors, Hero Honda, DLF, Hindalco, RComm, JP Associates and ICICI Bank ended with sharp losses.

GAIL, Cipla, HCL Tech, Unitech, Siemens and Nalco closed on a firm note.

The market breadh was positive right through the session.
