Mumbai: Indian Railways is working towards upgrading its wagon maintenance and repair capacities by setting up three more repair points. One site each in the east, west and south zones have been identified for the purpose.
Railway revenue goes up by 21.14 per cent
The proposal is in accordance with Railways’ capacity expansion plan to add more wagons in the fleet, which simultaneously requires more repairing capacities.
Railways faces key talent flight
A Railways official said all three zonal railways have received the notification and the work has started.
To meet the growth in rail freight traffic, Railways plans to procure 20,000 wagons in the current fiscal. Last year it had ordered 15,000 wagons. In the container business, state-owned Container Corp of India owns close to 8,000 wagons and has ordered for another 3,100 by the next year. Moreover more private players are set to enter the segment (16 have received the container rail licence).
Although the private operators own their wagons they have to approach the Railways maintenance units for the repair works.
The only wagon maintenance and repair unit is located in Delhi and has a capacity to repair 250 wagons a month. The unit is getting overloaded and cannot handle the growing repairing demands.
The new units will have a capacity of repairing about 250 wagons a month, which increases the overall repairing capacity by three-fold.
Container trains run across the country. These have to be transported back to Delhi for all kinds of maintenance work. The railway official explained that the expenditure incurred in transporting wagons back and fro is set to grow with the fleet size increasing.
Providing for a repair unit in each zone would help operators reach the nearest unit and cut down on the transportation cost and non-operating days.
