This
young and vibrant Union Communication and IT Minister of India is
undoubtedly the top newsmaker of the year. Brushing aside his lack
of political experience, the 39-year-old Maran outperformed his
cabinet colleagues to handle his portfolios of IT and telecom sector
with aplomb.
Maran
took advantage of the conducive atmosphere in the country for FDI
and was instrumental in getting most of the $ 6.5-billion investment
in IT and the $ 2.5-billion FDI in telecom. Among the major units
which he successfully wooed are Cisco, ($1.1 billion), Intel ($
1 billion), AMD (along with SemIndia for $ 3-billion fab unit),
Nokia ($ 200 million), Flextronics ($ 100 million) and Microsoft
($ 1.7 billion).
