Stree Gaanam, a unique exercise to present the works of women composers in Carnatic music, will be premiered on the eve of International Women’s Day on 7th March 2005 in Mumbai.
Stree Gaanam is a research-based presentation on women composers in Carnatic classical music. It is a classical event in carnatic music style and is an attempt to present the works of half-a-dozen women composers, spanning six centuries from the 12th to the present day. The women composers chosen for this exercise are: Tallapakka Thimakka, Mahadevi Akka, Prices Rukmani Bai Tampuratti, Maddu Palani, Bangalore Nagaratanamma and Ambujam Krishnan.
Mumbai-based dancer-cum-vocalist Vasumathi Badrinathan is the woman behind this exercise.
This project is being supported by the Department of Culture, Government of India Sanjeevani Kutty, Secretary Culture and Tourism, Government of Maharashtra, will be the guest of honour for this event. Some of the living present day women composers from Chennai are also expected to be present on the occasion and they will be felicitated during the event.
