Shankaracharyas are propagators of Brahmanism – time for India to get rid of their influence
The original Shankara (circa 800 AD) was a Brahmin from Kerala, who restored Brahmanical orthodoxy after Buddhism had taken hold of India.  Shankara preached that life was maya, an illusion.  It was not exactly a dynamic philosophy, destined to make Indians into an industrious people.  Everything is an illusion – except of course the Brahmanical caste system, with the Brahmin at the apex !  That is the only reality in the Brahmanical philosophy.  Shankara set up mutts at Shringeri, Dwaraka, Puri and Badrinath that have continued to propagate his thinking.  Other Shankara centres also grew with time.

While Shankara is held forth as a deep-thinking philosopher, his only tangible achievement was to see off the challenges to Brahmanism from various heterodox sects and the popular devotional cults of Tamil saints, defeat Buddhism in the 9th century and restore Brahmin control in India.  Shankara’s Advaita philosophy did find admirers abroad in places like Germany in the 19th century, but the foreigners take what they want, and they don’t have to live with the consequences of Brahmanism.

I don’t think Shankara’s philosophy, where everything is an illusion, has any value in a technological age.  So while assessing him, one must give weightage not to the philosophy but his actions to keep India within the Brahmanical grip.  Thus, on balance, it has to be said Shankara did a lot of damage to India.

There is no indication that the Shankara’s followers, the present day Shankara acharyas, are any less reactionary.   They are the flag bearers of Brahmanical Hinduism, the system of graded inequality invented by the Brahmins, in which they are at the apex.    It is said the current Kanchi Shankara did some social work, even for the Dalits.  This is probably an exaggeration and was motivated by the fear the Dalits would convert.  Has the Kanchi Shankaracharya or any current Shankaracharya ever said that caste should be abolished ?   Has he ever condemned Hindutva fascism, or taken a lead against Hindu mob violence, perpetrated in the name of restoring Hindu pride ?  Has he ever condenmned the violence perpetrated on the Dalits, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs in India by the upper caste Hindus ?  If he had the moral authority, he could have spoken out against Modi and Advani.

Tamil Nad has taken a lead in fighting Brahmanism.  It is time for the rest of the country to follow suit.   No doubt the Brahmins and the upper castes (like gopala here) will squeal and be outraged at the arrest of the Kanchi Shankara, but for the bulk of the populace, it makes no difference.

Bickerings of a "secularist"

Are you a communist or a muslim? I always say that both are the two sides of the same stupidity.

So, fighting Brahmanism is the need of hour! All evils will be eradicated by abolishing brahmanism. I say that you are obsessed with anti-brahmanic thoughts fed by your masters. Sankaracharya had an objective when he put up four matts in the country. Do you know that he was the one most affected by your "brahmanism"? If there was an anti-brahmin, it should have been Adi Shankara.

Over and above, I can say  the scheduled castes in India are enjoying the Brahmin status in this century.  Everywhere he has to be respected.  There are reservations in everywhere for the neo-brahmins.

Better you read more about Sankara and "Illusion" then comment.
