In defense of Lallu Lallu is King Joker if one were to believe what is written in the media about him. He also is painted “tainted”, unfit for holding any ministerial post in the government as he had been jailed a few times for indulging in activities not totally legal, and is held accountable for below normal economic development of the Bihar state he rules under the thumb imprint of his wife, Rabri Devi. No wonder, the opposition parties and the media are vocal in their demand for his removal from the central government and accuse the PM for giving in to blackmail by Lallu; RJD, Lallu’s party is the life support of the UPA coalition in power at the center.
Strange is the game of Politics; Power and not morality or honesty defines its rules and
Make-break of party alliances! The opposing parties would hail Lallu as an avatar of honesty and champion of downtrodden if he were to desert the coalition and join them in toppling Dr. Singh’s cabinet.
Politics is vote-banks! There is hardly any political party in India or anywhere else that doesn’t count on their vote banks to win elections. Incidentally, Yadav vote bank is potent but so are the Hindutava, Dalits, Jats vote banks.
If it is India, it is corruption. Much is not written about Rabri Devi and Lallu’s getting filthy rich because of their positions. It won’t be a surprise if cases of their taking advantage of their position surface, but so are the others politicians and bureaucrats.
Communal strife in Bihar is not so deadly as is in a few other states. Shiv Sainks and Sangh privar don’t run government in parallel and impose behavioral norms on the public.
The Bihar state is way behind in economic development, a matter of serious concern, but no Bihari has been reported to commit suicide because of hunger. Its air is polluted but it does not emit stench from burning human flesh.
The state’s underdevelopment is attributed, among other things, to its underutilizing funds allocated to the state by the central government. The government could have used every penny of the allotted funds and some more and still not show any betterment; the money could have improved the lot of the bureaucrats. Nevertheless, it is a serious matter, and the delinquent parties should be held accountable. In this regard, not only the state government failed its constituents, the state administration, the governor and the central government are also delinquent in not ensuring that the funds are utilized.
Bihar is no heaven by any stretch of imagination and Lallu definitely is no angel, but Bihar is no hell and Lallu is no demon either. |
