REVIEW OF ‘TAMIL PADAMS’ BY VASUMATHI BADRINATHAN It takes real confidence to bring out a CD with only padams, only tamil padams at that. Vasumathi Badrinathan, with her bass voice, enthralls us by giving us tasefully chosen numbers, rendered in a pleasant and pleasing style. Originally conceptualized as pieces that were ideal for dancers to display their emotional expressions, padams found their way into mainstream carnatic music concerts platforms mainly due to their expressive construction and intricate nuances. The artiste’s voice and style suit the slow rhythm of padams. Her deep involvement in the songs give them their due meaning and portray emotions beautifully. She also has good control over her voice in the higher octaves, proving her versatility in the rendering. The presentation starts with “Padari varugudu in Kambodhi, followed by Netrandu neratille in Useni. She handles Thodi and Kalyani with ease and does not fail to beign out the special aspects of these ragas. Ethanai sonnalum in Saveri will definitely please us. After an abosorbing Karaharapriya and Bhairavi, she finishes with Kapi. Kalaimamani Thiruvarur N. Balam, provides able support on the violin. Hanumanthapuram R.J.Bhuvarahan has accompanied on the mrudangam and Mannai.K.R.Venkatraman on the Morsing.
