Tunga Tharange

Charsur digital workstation has recently released a cassette titled “Tunga tharange”. The base line of the title ‘…on the banks of’ itself gives an idea about the theme of the cassette. Rendered by Sangeetha Sivakumar, this cassette holds a collection of songs based on rivers. Five rivers having a prominent place in our tradition have been portrayed well through the songs of illustrious composers inspired by the rivers. The opening composition ‘tunga tarange’ in the raga Kunthalavarali,though a slow launch,sets up a musical milieu. Then follows a kriti in Saveri ‘kari kalabhamukha’ of Dikshithar that marks a rare beginning of Saveri along with ‘Svarakshara’ in ‘kari’ (‘gari’). listen to sample.Sangeetha has then magnetized the listener by singing the popular kriti of Sadasiva Brahmendra ‘Gaayathi vanamali’ in madhyama sruti with a prelude of a short alapana in Hamsadhwani raga.The second side comprises of an in-depth elucidation of Hemavathi alapana.Sangeetha has taken immense care to envelope all the main prayogas of the raga in her alapana, with a magnificent follow up by S.Varadarajan on the violin. She has rendered Dikshithar’s “Sri Kanthimathim” adorned with neraval and kalpana swara patterns that are fairly woven in the sahitya ‘shukha shownakaathi”. The cassette concludes with a virutham in Mohanam and Varali followed by a mangalam that speaks about the rivers namely Ganga, Narmada, Saraswathi, Godavari, Kaveri, Mahanadhi and so on.The five kritis selected in this album has mention about the five rivers - Ganga, Kaveri, Yamuna, Thamirabharani,Godavari respectively.While the company deserves appreciation for bringing up good thematic concepts, they should also pay attention to minor details. The cassette contains few spelling mistakes including the spelling of the artiste - Sudha Sankaran.
