Manamohanapriya
Price:
The album ’Manamohanapriya’ rendered by the successful duo Priya sisters is a collection of 9 songs released by HMV. The tape flips open with Tyagaraja’s “Naadha Sudha”, a bright kriti in Arabhi raga that induces the listener to continue further with his hearing. Hindolam has attained a fine treatment in the next kriti ’Saama Gaana’, a famous piece composed by the veteran vocalist GNB. listen to sample. The Sri raga kriti ‘’Naama kusuma’, though a slow one is testimony for the absolute synchronization of the sisters’ mellifluous voices that match to an extent, that the listener gets a doubt whether he is listening to a solo or duo performance. The kriti to follow is ‘’Shikhi Vahana’, a bright and fast paced composition that invokes a janaranjaka experience in the listener. The word “Gananaadha sodhara’ in the Charana sounds like “Gananaadhaso dhara’ which is rather displeasing.Side B starts with the exposition of Thodi alapana, which though not very elaborate is quite sated with depth. Although one would miss their neraval in Thodi, they have elated the rasikas by their refined elaboration of Thodi through their extempore kalpana swaras. Even a layman would tap his leg when he listens to their madhyamakala chitta swara for “Vidajaaladura”, an evoking piece in Janaranjani. The sisters have enthused the audience with their bright presentation of the pieces “Anni mantramulu” and “Neenyako”. The virutham “Indina vaara” sung as a preface for the piece “Neenyako” is a listening delight. The tape rounds off with a breezy thillana of Lalgudi Jayaraman in Madhuvanthi that leaves the listener spell bound. Their spirited singing with perfect coordination in the album with the warm support extended by K.Sivaraman on the violin will unambiguously win acclaim among music enthusiasts. Though the album offers scope for a variety of compositions of different composers in various languages, it is more kalpita-oriented. Thirvarur Vaidyanathan and Vaikom Gopalakrishnan have enlivened the recital with their apt strokes on the Mridangam and Ghatam This album is a perfect musical treat to the keen listeners of carnatic music. - Sudha Sankaran.
