Ekaika Ragam
Price:
Ekaika ragam - as the title itself hints - is a series released by Times music group, each cassette in the series focusing on only one ragam. This cassette defines the lakshana of Dwijavanthi raga with an elaborate exposition of alapana, tanam, kriti, neraval and swaram rendered in the powerful voice of Neyveli Santhanagopalan. An artiste steeped in traditional classicism, yet highly innovative, Santhanagopalan has emerged as an effective bridge between traditional convention and the present-day neo-music. The whole of Side A comprises of an exhaustive elucidation of Dwijavanthi raga alapana and tanam that are replete with bhava, making the listener content of listening to a full concert. Violinist Pakala Ramdas has skillfully expounded the intricacies of Dwijavanthi through his bowing technique. The second side includes the rendering of the famous kriti “Akhilandeswari” succeeded by spontaneous Neraval and Kalpana swaras that add luster to the kriti. listen to sample. But the general preference would be in favour of including many songs in one raga rather than featuring one piece in one raga. A listener keen in listening to Ghana ragas would also be disappointed. Likewise, if compositions of various composers in the same raga are featured in a cassette, the rasika can enjoy the full exposition of the raga handled in different styles.Thani avarthanam of Guruvayur Dorai is an impressive rhythmic edifice. A detailed raga exposition that too at the very beginning of the cassette tests the endurance of the listener. Moreover, too much of raga elaboration of Dwijavanthi handled in a very light manner leaves a feeling of having listened to a Hindustani Sangeeth rather than a typical carnatic concert - Sudha Sankaran.
