Lalgudi G Jayaraman - Charsur - Paddhati series, Vol 1Its not often that recording companies dare to break the beaten path, and when they do appreciation and recognition should be rightfully theirs. Ever since their inception, Charsur have thrived to use earth-friendly material for this cassettes and CDs and this one in their Paddhati series betters most of their own. Sans the plastic plate that seems inevitable to keep the CD in place, the material, colors and design are rich in culture and ethnicity. Almost matching the religious adherence to classicism by the contents within!Connoisseurs of music and Lalgudi fans have something to cheer about, especially those who miss his style and flow that enthralled musicians and listeners decades ago. A replay of a 1985 concert it has all the ingredients of a typical Lalgudi show, neatly balanced on a digital media. If you have the right equipment, switch off the lights and sit back for a good concert.Die-hard Patnam fans may not nod for they would prefer the spicy, gana raaga, fast-paced varnams to start a long concert, to the slow, elaborate and rather elastic self-composed Bouli varnam in this concert. It is however symbolic of Lalgudi’s musical values and probably the more popular too. The slow start is however soon offset by a brisk Varanamukha in Hamsadhwani and Janaki Ramana in Sudha Seemandhini.Not for long though, as Lalgudi returns with a big dose of pathos, with Janani Ninuvina listen to sample in Reetigowlai. However, the synchronized effect of two violins - son Krishnan - sounding like one needs special mention here. Aadamodi galade in Charukesi and Nee Iranga yenil in Ataana do little to change the pace, but offer rich display of perfection in rendering and understanding of compositions.And true to his following, Karaikudi Mani’s fans have reason to cheer. You can feel the equation between him and Harishankar, falling in total line to give a memorable concert. As hair and string come in contact, the instrument is lifted to new heights, an accomplishment unique to Lalgudi, deservingly mentioned in the CD cover. For classical lovers, this one is a treasure.-critique
