Vasundhra Rajagopal (disciple of T R Subramanyam) has sung for Amutham Company (CD) with the accompanists H N Bhasker (violin), Neyveli Skandasubramanyam (Mridangam) and Pudukottai Ramachandran (Ghatam). The not so common song in Aarabhi ‘Ganarajene’ by Muthuswami Dikshitar has been rendered in a lively manner with kalpanaswras for the line in Charanam ‘Dinakara Koti Prakasena’. A breezy ‘enthavedukondu’ in Saraswathi Manohari follows. Karaharapriya ragam has been very hurriedly sung with a few swaras (Korisevimpa rare by Thyagaraja). ‘Theruvadheppo Nenje’ by Neelakanta Sivan is only average and doesn’t really appeal to the connoisseur. Charukesi piece Kannan Thiruvadi (Subramanya Bharatiar) tuned by Calcutta K S Krishnamurthy. Ardhanareeswaram in Kumudhukriya ragam follows and has been sincerely rendered. The next to follow is the Shankarabaranam ragam which is again very brief. Mahalakshmi (Papanasam Sivan) is chosen with swaras in the charanam ‘Parkadal tharum Kripakari’. Vasundhra moves on to sing a Meerabai bhajan in Darbari Kanada. A Slokam precedes the Sindhu Bairavi piece ‘Tamburi meetidava’ by Purandaradasar. This has been briskly rendered. A very well rendered ‘Dheerea Sameere’ (Jayadevar Ashtapadi) in Desh follows. ‘Ododi Vanden Kanna’ in Dharmavathi (Ambujam Krishna), Rama Rama by Thyagaraja (Chenjurutti) and a Hamsanandhi Thillana (Muthiah Bagavathar) are the other Thukkadas. Strangely there is no Neraval rendition or Tani Avarthanam played for this recording. The CD seems to be cramped with too many krithis and fails to give satisfied listening. The write up about the artiste in the inlay card is very well done and carried out for the accompanists too. A thumbnail size picture of the accompanists could have also been carried in the cover.- nv
