Vasantha Ninaivu
Price: Rs 300
Nithyasree Mahadevan, for the cause of Cancer Patients, has sung for Vasantha Memorial Trust. The Live concert at Coimbatore has been released as a CD titled ‘Vasantha Ninaivu’. Her crystal clear voice has mellifluously beautified the Vasantha Varnam which has been rendered in two speeds. The next piece is ‘Durmarga’ (St Thyagaraja’s) in Ranjani. This is sung in a reasonably good tempo and maintained the same throughout, giving the listener a relaxed listening. Swaras were crisply sung for the line ‘Paluku Potti Nee’ in the charanam. The evergreen ‘Meena Lochana Brova’ in Dhanyasi (Shyama Sastri) comes next. Nithya has neatly rendered this krithi with just enough punches given at the required phrases, doing full justice to the krithi and the ragam. Following this is an elaborately rendered Ragam Thanam Pallavi in Shankarabaranam. The verse ‘Paasamodu Thandhidovom nesa karangal…’ which is set to Kanda jathi Triputa talam. All along the violinist M A Krishnaswami has been extremely subdued and has shown a few classic touches in the brief Shankarabaranam ragam during his solo turn. Revagupthi, Vasantha, Madhuvanthi and Soorya were applied during swara singing.‘Vasantha Ninaivu sevaikku’ is a song specially composed for the occasion explaining the need to serve those affected by the disease. Though the song in very simple Tamil and quite dramatic in effect, Nithya has tried her best to render it like just another thukkada in a regular concert. Her accompanists have ably co-operated with her. The next to follow is a piece by Mata Amrithamayi in Malayalam (‘Agale Agale’ in ragam Poorya Dhanasri). The song itself has filmy touch and Nithya definitely needs to take more care of the Malayalam pronunciation. The percussionists are Sivakumar on the Mridagam and Tirupur Sridhar Kumar on the Kanjira. The volume of applause by the audience at the end of each song, could have been a little more subdued while recording. The CD is priced at Rs 300.– SC
