'Great Masters' series
Price:
Voleti Venkateswarlu was one vidwan who captured the imagination of carnatic music rasikas and connoisseurs alike with his graceful, bhava laden and melodious renderings. The late vidwan from Andhra will always hold a special place in the annals of carnatic music and Media Dreams has put in its efforts to keep alive the music of another great master. The latest in its series on Great Masters are two albums of Voleti Venkateswarlu. The album begins with a brief delineation of raga Vasanta followed by Annamacharya's “Vaade Venkatagiri” sung in a mesmerizing manner with a little kalpanaswara in the Pallavi portion and goes on to give a good collection of some of the master pieces sung by a master musician. A number of favorite kritis of Voleti Venkateswarlu including Subbaraya Sastri's “Sankari Nee Ve” is included in the album. The delineation of Begada and Todi are exemplary in their mellifluity while the alapana of Kalyani at once takes us to a serene set of mind. The rendition of Syama Sastri's “Ninne Namminanu” and “Karunajooda” in Sriragam, absolutely laden with raga bhava amply justifies the name and fame enjoyed by the vidwan. Another of Syama Sastri's wonderful creation “Mayamma” in Ahiri is one where the composer appeals to Madurai Meenakshi Amman to protect him who has unconditionally surrendered unto Her lotus feet. Voleti Venkateswarlu's rendition of the song makes us plead the Devi, one with the composer. Other kritis like, Sadasiva Brahmendral's “Nahire”, Subbaraya Sastri's “Ninnuvina”, Adi Sankara's “Bhaja Govindam” in Misra Mand, Bodhendra's “Brahmaiva Akilam” in Misra Sivaranjani all make the listener yearn for more.
