Lalgudi Thillanas
Price:
Thillanas have always been loved by the fansof carnatic music. They are unique in their rhythm and impressive structure.Their importance and their status in that art form have been greatly enhanced byLalgudi Sri.G.Jayaramans Thillanas. His thillanas are excellent compositions asare his varnams and they need no introduction. The great musicians style isreflected in the rendering of these thillanas. G.J.R.Krishnan and LalgudiVijayalakshmi have rightly inherited the style and art of Lalgudi in all ways.In their cassette, "Thillanas", they have selected a total 8wonderfulthillanas by their father and have rendered them very well. They have theadvantage of two violins together, which makes it more interesting to listen to.They blend together and sound like a single violin and suddenly separate withone violin sounding in the higher octave and the other in the lower octave, thusadding strength to the concert. They play with perfect intonation, with stressin the right places and sounding soft in the right places. As is characteristicof their style of playing, they exhibit perfect control over the bow. Theirbowing techniques are commendable and sahityam is maintained beautifully. Theirmusic is clean and pure and flows freely. The gamakkams that they use are alsotypical of their style of music and add beauty to their music. They soundequally at home and at ease in the higher and in the lower octaves. They areundoubtedly the right heirs to a great father. Lalgudis thillanas include thillanas in rareragas such as Misra Mand,Bageshri and Yamunakalyani to mention a few. He hasshown mastery over these rare ragas through his thillanas. These thillanas, when listened to, are capable of lifting our minds to great heights of peace andhappiness. This has been proved many times over and over again. But, whenorchestra is combined with these thillanas, the continuity is broken and themood of the listener is disturbed. Thus, the greatness of the compositions andthe uniqueness of the thillanas are masked by the orchestra. Orchestra doesnot suit thillanas as much as it suits Bhakthi songs. The orchestra soundspleasant on its own, but the cassette would have sounded much better if it hadbeen without the orchestra. R.Ramesh on the Mridangam and V.Suresh on theGhatam make perfect accompanists.- vidya
