Jagruthi An awakening by Jayanthi (Veena) is far from being an usual carnaticconcert. This is a new attempt made, with a variety of instruments like theVeena, the flute, Violin, Harp, Konnakal, Mrudangam and Ghatam. A variety ofsongs have also been carefully selected to combine tradition and innovation.Added to this, is the human voice now and then. The chanting of a slokapreceeds every song.The cassette begins with the varnam Arunodayam in Bauli preceeded by Asathomasargamaya.The varnam is presented well by the artist, but the use of so many instrumentsdo not really vibe. Next comes Entha nee vina in Urmika and then Kaamakshi inBhairavi. Paal vadiyum mugam has been handled well. The Sivasthuthi has alsobeen included in the cassette. It is also preceeded by chanting and there is ajoint presentation of the veena and the Sri Rudhram.The listener gets the feeling that too many instruments have been used and doesnot know what to expect next. The concentration of the listener is shifted fromthe music to the identification and thoughts about the different instrumentsused. In some places the use of the harp and the konnakkal seem to besuperfluous.It is a commendable effort made by artists leading in their own fields. But,when they come together, do they really succeed, is to be decided by everyindividual listener.-vidya
