Anandam
Price:
Blessed with a voice that would melt any music connoisseur’s mind P.Unnikrishnan presents a choice collection of Carnatic songs titled Aanandam. Opening with Papanasam Sivan’s Ataana piece ‘Nee Irangaayenil Pugaledhu’ the voice wafts in pure melody in madhyama kaalam infusing freshness to the entire presentation. The line Sakala Ulakir Kkumnee Thaayallavo’ is oddly spaced where one would be happy listening the word Ulagirkkum in entirety. The kalpanaswaras for ‘Paalkkadalil Udithha’ springs with team effort matching Unni’s virtuosity. The Simhendramadhyama Raaga Aalaapana with Akaarams gliding through Panchama-Shadja- varjya prayogams seems interesting , for , the brisk format supplements as a sharp contrast to the second section of the raga in higher octaves with mellowed sangathis beautifying the Raagini. The krithi Unnai Allal by Koteeswara Iyer is full of Bhaava , more in the charanam when the crystal voice touches the manthara Panchama for ‘Appa enave solli’ ending with the words Brahmendrarkkariya Simhendra Madhyama – and the swaras for Kanai Kadal Soozh aptly twisting for the word ‘soozh’ after the swaras. The raagam Lalita with sanchaaras bordering on light touches expresses the mood of helplessness as a prelude to the meaning of the krithi ‘Nannu Brovu Lalitha’ . The phrase ‘NinnuVinaa Evvarunnaaru’ gets separated everytime sounding like two words Evaru and Naaru, whereas a ‘U’ kaara prior to the word Naaru would give the right meaning of Unnaru. The fatalistic point lies in the many of his admirers who might end up repeating the same mistake beyond repair. Unnikrishnan's elaboration Thodi raaga aalaapana on B side is a mark of a very sensitive portrayal of nuances in his own charming baani. The rare swathi thirunaal krithi `Pankajaksha' stands out for its rich classicism. The kalpanaswara for Padmanabha Paahi Paahi is gripping . The thaniaavarthanam by K.V.Prasad and A.S.Shankar on Mridangam and Ghatam respectively is taut with a rhythmic finesse. The nimble fingers of Prasad spell Sunaadam at its best. Following is a resounding SindhuBhairavi by Unni. The piece Kandu Nee Sollavendum, extols the virtue of the nayika requesting her Sakhi to narrate the sufferings in separation , yearning to meet her Lord Muruga. The anupallavi and the similar line in charanam detours in Gaandhaara , that opens up a beautiful suggestive graha bhedam transposing dhaivatham as shadja with gaandhaara as panchamam. The final piece in the raagam Maand ‘Krishnam Kalaya Sakhi Sundaram’ penned by Sri.Narayana Theertha easily would appeal to the devoted music lovers, however the stanza of the Vaggeyakaara is missing for reasons unknown. A fabulous audio treat for music lovers and especially Unnikrishnan's admirers. The violin accompaniment of Sri.S.Varadarajan compliments the vocalists styleof Sukhanubhava with every phrase establishing a rapport with the baani. Thethodi aalaapana is the highlight alongwith the kalpanaswaras for Ataana andThodi in a befitting manner.
