Subrahmaniam, the renowned veteran, makes experience a notable value in his singing. The Kriti "Palisamma Muddhu Sharadi" in Sri Ranjani is a lovely choice and has been handled very well. The kalpana swaras at "Sarvalankaradaya", reveals his strict control over laya. Though they were single-avarthana swaras, they were very interesting. The ease with which this is done is admirable. The Poorvi Kalyani Piece " Manavajanma dotta" in Misra chapu thalam was preceded by a detailed alapana of the raga. In this, the trial to explore the higher octave, has not resulted in pleasant hearing and leaves the singer alone satisfied about having accomplished the feat of reaching the higher "pa".The Kalpana Swaras, again, were the ones that made the listener raise eyebrows."Parakumadade" in Karaharapriya was enjoyable with neraval at "Naranolag'e". Thani avarthanam was engrossing. T.Rukmini's rendition of Poorvikalyani and Karaharapriya deserves special mention. The lighter "Ramamantrava Japiso' in Jhonpuri and "Tamburu meeti" in Sindhubairavi were the tail pieces.On the whole, it is a cassette for a learner more than for a listener.- A K.
