Arupadai Veedu
Price: Rs.45
Arupadai veedu is the title of Kalavardhini's 100th cassette. As the name suggests, it is a collection of songs dedicated to lord Muruga, in his celebrated kshetras. The singer N.Vijay Siva has carefully chosen the 6 pieces, ensuring that a judicious mix of raga, tala, composer and language has new been incorporated, within the frame work of the theme. Starting with the bright piece 'Vaangum Enakku' in Kambodi by Oothukkadu Venkatasubbier in praise of the lord of Thiruthanigai. Vijay Siva impressed with his clean diction such that it would be very easy for one to learn the song. The next piece 'Thiruparankundravelaa' is a touching piece by Papanasam Sivan, and Vijay has rendered it with great bhava. A raga alapana of Bilhari announces the next piece. Vijay starts this in the tharasthayi and this alapana while fully adhering to the raga bhava, contains some unusual phrases too. The song 'Sri Balasubramanya' by Dikshitar (Swamimalai) gives eveidence of excellent patanthara. It also provides the variety in Tala and language. being the only sanskrit krithi in the collection. The main raga comes next - Bhairavi. In this alapana Vijay is not able to avoid a few harsh phrases. But taking into consideration the theme of this cassette, keeps raga short and crisp. The song 'Pazham nee.....pazhani...' by Thooram is a beautiful piece & one wonder why it is heard so rarely. Virutham singing has always been Vijay's strong point and this (ragamalika) virutham of Swaminatha Desikar is no exception. The ragamalika piece deserves special mention. The krithi is "Kandanadhu Paadhara" in Behag by Kovai Subri, dedicated to Thiruchendur kshetra and should please the knowledgeble rasikas and the laymen alike. Concluding with a sprightly and beautiful thiruppughazh 'Agaramumaagi' in Jaganmohini (Pazhamudhircholai) Vijay leaves, all-in-all, a feeling of satisfaction after the cassette is gone through. That violinist R K Shriramkumar and mridangist J.Vaidhyanathan have been long associates of Vijay Siva is evident from their accompanying techniques. RKS follows faithfully whilst JV with his soft sarvalaghu touches gives his 100% to enhance the recital.
