Seasons
Price:
The music season of Madras is one of the most unique phenomena occuring in India, nay even the world perhaps. An estimated six hundred artistes showcase their talents in nearly two dozen sabhas to an audience that travels from all over the globe, in just over two weeks of musical downpour in December, year after year.R V Ramani's 'Sesaon' is a video film that tries to capture the flavour of this phenomenon. The video camera sneaks backstage for a major part of the film to have a glimpse of what the artiste do before a perforrmance (the shots were taken during the 1996-97 Music Festival in six major sabhas). There are snippets of conversation mostly irrelevant to the viewers but never the less serving as a backdrop to the music clippings that are on show. The curtain goes up on Master Sashank playing the flute. Next follows a practice session of Srilatha Suresh and doyen Kelucharan Mohapatra with a jugalbandhi featuring Kardri Gopalanatha and Kanyakumari sandwiched in between. Thre are images of artistes packing up to leave for the concert or after it. A group of musicians sit together chatting while one of them aligns the sruthi. There candid shots of T Viswanathan having a puff (of his inhaler) just before his concert. The camera captures rare moments of famous artistes greeting each other. Amjad Ali Khan meeting T N Seshagopalan, Flautist N Ramani meeting T Viswanathan. The crowd surges around dancer Chitra Visweswaran, Leela Samson and Lakshmi Knight, to congratulate them. There are extensive music coverages of Bombay Jayashri, Sowmya, T N Seshagopalan, Neyveli Santhanagopalan and Aruna Sairam. Unfortunately many of these artistes in close-up shots were seen closing their eyse through out their recital. When seen live, this is unavoidable in a concert, but in a video clipping it does not look very appealing. Aruna Sairam's song gains stature because it is translated on scree. The Tani Avarthanam is also represented in a short burst played by Velloe Ramabadhran et al. to the appreciative, tapping and nodding of the audience. At certain points the capture of empty halls could have been avoided. The veteran Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer regales a full house and then announces that he is unable to continue further. There is an interview with Sanjay Subramaniam at what looks like the canteen of The Music Academy. There is a coverage of the culinary at one of the canteens with the crowds thronging it. The ambience of the sadas at the Academy is also well captured. On the technical side, the lighting and sound quality are just about average. There are long gaps in between one image and the other, where nothing seems to take place in front of the camera. There are some extreme close-ups of artistes, when they seem to be least prepared for it, and in some footage, the camera seems to swing widely to cover a larger audience. Many of the veterans like T K Govinda Rao, P S Narayanswamy, K V N and Vedavalli have been left out. So too, the violin solo artistes. The presentation is thus loaded in favour of the artistes of the younger generation. This is a cassette which packages the season into three hours and manages to convey some of the sesons magic too.
