Annamacharya's Sapthagiri Sankirtanas

The "Sapthagiri Sankirthanas" of Saint Annamacharya have not been so well standardized by the TTD that they have come to be regarded with the same respect as one has for Sri Tyagaraja's famous Pancharathnas. The Vidwans who worked on these Annamayya's compositions have, in a large measure succeeded in crystallizing the intensity and fervor, their tranquility and meditative feel, without hindering the quiet flow of melody that is all important for bhakti songs.The Kalavardhini cassettes has the standard seven pieces rendered by Smt. Akhila Siva and four of her disciples, with Poorna Siva on the violin and the versatile Vijay Siva on mridangam giving ample support. The start with "Bhavamnlona" (Shudda Danyasi) and 'Brhma Kadigina" (Mukhari) is bright with tingling tones. "Entha Mathrammna" in Brindavani is strongly dull, while one expected "Padaganthimayya" (Mohanam) to have more animation. Even Hindolam ("Kondalona") is a trifle stodgy.It is anxious that the singers' partiality for Behag ("Narayanathe") and Kurinji ("Muddagare") is well manifested through melodic finesse and lambent beauty. Vocalist Vijay Siva has given rhythmic support . Though at times the "thoppi" of the mridangam sounded less effective he has done his best to enhance the beauty of the krithis. Poorna Siva's violin accompaniment is quietly efficient.
