The nine days of Navaratri are celebrated in honour of the same goddess who is called by three different names. The first three days are celebrated by praying to the all-pervasive goddess with the name Durga!
She is the goddess who destroys evil and demons. Let us look at Navaratri in a different angle. If the goddess of the first three days - Durga - is prayed to, the planet Rahu can be appeased as Durga is the devtha for Rahu. Everyday, one and a half hours are kept aside for the planet Rahu. In the same way, the first three days are set aside for Durga. We can understand the importance from the fact that she is given the priority of the first three days.
Other planets help in getting pleasures in this life, whereas Rahu and Kethu are for giving Moksha - happiness in the next life.
Praying to Durga with kumkum will relieve us from the problems of Rahu dasa or Rahu in the important houses of horoscope (like lagna, moon sign as well as 4th house, 7th house and from 9th house either from lagna or moon sign without getting any auspicious nullification).
We are usually expected to give thamboolam (paan) to ladies. This will indirectly be a puja for Durga and in other words a good remedy for a weak Rahu position in the horoscope.
Mostly, Rahu-based problems are delay in marriage and child birth. Thus the celebration of the first three days with sincere prayers will take away the hurdles in the same!
The numerological number of Rahu is 4. Those who are born in this birth number (i.e. in the dates - 4, 13, 22 and 31) will surely stand to gain by the first part Navaratri (which is Durga puja) if they are very sincere about praying to Durga. By chanting her name continuously or by going to the temple of Durga on these three days they are sure to be successful in their life.
